JAMES ROUTH
INDEPENDENT DOCUMENTARY DIRECTOR
RETAINED / PROJECT CONSULTANCY
I offer creative direction, training and editorial oversight
on a retained or consultancy basis.
What this is
Alongside project-based films, I’m open to working on a retained basis with a small number of organisations or individuals, or as a 'light touch' consultant on individual projects.

This takes the form of offering senior editorial judgement, creative direction and continuity over time, or when a project needs it.

It’s not about producing more content.
It’s about clarity, confidence and better decisions.
When this works
My support can make sense where:
-
content matters, but lacks clear direction
-
decisions feel reactive or fragmented
-
there’s no single editorial voice
-
senior guidance or mentoring is needed, but not full-time
-
continuity matters more than campaigns
This tends to suit founder-led businesses, cultural organisations, or individuals with a public profile who want a considered, authored approach. It may also suit broadcast or streamer projects in need of guidance, or younger talent looking for someone to turn to.
What I bring
In a retained role, my contribution will be primarily editorial and strategic, rather than operational. This can include:
-
shaping overall content direction and priorities
-
advising on tone, voice and editorial standards
-
guidance on formats, platforms and pacing
-
acting as a sounding board for ideas and work in progress
-
helping decide what not to make, as much as what to make
The emphasis is on credibility, judgement, taste and calm oversight.
HOW THIS WORKS
A modest, agreed time commitment
Clear boundaries and expectations
An initial period to test whether it’s the right fit
If this approach feels relevant, the next step is simply a conversation — to explore whether there’s a useful fit, and what that might look like.
